### Summary

This position is in Region 2, Laboratory Services and Applied
Science Division, Laboratory Branch, Organic and Inorganic Chemistry
Section, in Edison, NJ. If selected, you must work at the location

### Responsibilities

At the entry level of this position, you will:

- Prepare, analyze, and evaluate environmental samples for the
determination of contaminants and chemical parameters;

- Interpret and evaluate data to determine its significance;

- Implement and adhere to Laboratory Quality Control system
requirements;

- Modify and validate methods;

- Provide technical assistance based on the analysis of
environmental samples.

duties and work more independently, as your career progresses.

### Qualifications

In addition to the educational requirements, we are looking for at
least one year of specialized experience related to this position as
described below:

To qualify for the GS-11 level, you need to have at least one year
of full-time experience equivalent to the GS-09 level defined as
preparing instrumental analysis of samples for the measurement of
inorganic contaminants/analytes in a laboratory - OR Ph.D. or
equivalent doctoral degree; or 3 full years of progressively higher
level graduate education leading to such a degree in the academic
discipline as described below.**

**Your answers to the on-line assessment will be used to evaluate
your competencies in the following areas: 1) Knowledge of chemical
contaminants and parameters; 2) Skill in using laboratory
instruments (e.g. Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission
Spectrometer, Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer) and
scientific equipment; 3) Knowledge of chemistry-based quality
control procedures and requirements; 4) Knowledge of federal, state,
local, and/or tribal environmental regulations, policies, and
requirements associated with inspection, enforcement and
compliance; 5) Skill in written communication; and 6) Skill in oral
communication.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer
work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps,
AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional,
philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social).
Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and
skills and can provide valuable training and experience that
translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for
all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

### Education

A bachelor's degree from an accredited or pre-accredited college or
university in:

Chemist: You must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited or
pre-accredited college or university in one of the following:
physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30
semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in
mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least
6 semester hours of physics; OR a combination of education and
experience -- including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry,
supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral
calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate
experience or additional education.
