Our Growth Mission is central to that effort.. The Role. We are looking for a new Head of Engineering for our Growth Mission, the team with primary responsibility for growing our number of subscribers. As the Head of Engineering, you will be at the center of the important work we're doing to grow the New York Times in order to support our journalism.. This is a senior leadership role within engineering at the Times. You will work closely with the Head of Growth to set the strategy for how we grow our business. You will also be a member of the senior leadership team within Product Engineering, leading a department of roughly 50 engineers.. The growth team is metrics-driven and experimental in approach. You will work across the entire product as you take on projects with the biggest potential to grow our audience and subscriber base. As a result, this is a highly collaborative role. You will work with much of our engineering and product team on projects ranging from building web and mobile onboarding experiences, to optimizing our conversion flows, to tailoring our product for international audiences.. You care about the role that journalism plays in the world and want to contribute to that mission through your skills in engineering leadership. You are motivated by goals and able to channel your enthusiasm to motivate and inspire teams. You are someone who values experimentation, thoughtful risk taking, and learning and fosters a culture where teams feel safe to take chances.. You will thrive in this role if you are able to craft an engineering strategy in support of business goals, and then to turn that strategy into execution. You should enjoy working through complex, open-ended problems with non-technical and technical peers. You are able to guide the team forward by making important decisions in times of ambiguity or uncertainty.. You have a keen interest in how to best energize and organize people around a mission. You also excel not only at the tactical day-to-day of running a team, but also at building an ambitious strategy for technology and executing on it. To make this work, you will be a strong communicator both verbally and written with people from all disciplines, including very senior partners from all parts of the company.. Requirements. Experience leading a large (20+) engineering team, including managing managers.. Experience working closely with diverse peers to set a strategy and roadmap.. Experience building high quality consumer products.. A track record of building inclusive teams.. Comfort with uncertainty, experimentation and learning.. Excellent communication skills.. Able to recruit and lead a world class engineering team.. Nice to Haves. Experience leading a team focused on growth or marketing projects.. A background in media or journalism.
